Melanie Martinez
February 20, 2016
Showbox Sodo- Seattle, WA
The second leg of Melanie Martinez’s Cry Baby tour finally started off in Seattle on February 20th. The entire tour had sold out months in advance so there was a lot of excitement coming from the line that went down a few blocks for the small venue.
By the time the line got completely inside, the opening band Alvarez Kings had started. The band had traveled over 22 hours the previous day from South Yorkshire to get to Seattle. Even so, that didn’t seem to affect their energy during their performance. Not many fans knew the small British band’s songs but they were dancing along the entire time while watching the band play songs like Tell-Tale Heart and Run From You from their EP Fear to Feel. They even had the entire room lit up with cell phone lights at one point. They did a good job of energizing the fans. I have a feeling this Indie band will be gaining a lot of new fans during this tour.
When it was time for Melanie Martinez to come on stage, over a thousand people began to chant her name. Melanie Martinez got her start on hit TV Show ‘The Voice’ back in 2012 and has become one of the most popular performers to come from show despite not winning. She released her EP Dollhouse in 2014 which gained her a lot of recognition from people but not as much as her newest album Cry Baby, which has multiple hit songs. It’s now 2016 and Melanie Martinez has sold out an entire North American tour in support of her album Cry Baby which came out in 2015 and is now on the second leg of the tour. The second leg of the tour had a lot of production such as light up letter blocks that spelled out “Cry Baby” and a gigantic crib that she popped out during her first song. Fans were dancing and screaming at the top of their lungs the entire night while she danced and sang hit songs Sippy Cup, Soap, Dollhouse and Pity Party as well as many other songs from her latest album and a few others from her EP. Although she claims to be shy and awkward she did a really good job of connecting with her fans in the crowd, asking them questions and having them sing parts of the songs with the microphone. For the encore she asked fans to choose the last song; which then everyone yelled for Cake.
When the show was finally over the fans didn’t want it to end; they cheered for a few minutes until it was obvious that the show was finally over. Fans left the venue with huge smiles while parents who accompanied their children left the show impressed. Since the entire tour is sold out, I hope you got tickets because this was a very impressive show that you don’t want to miss out on.
