9Electric and Otherwise

Whisky A Go-Go- Los Angeles, CA
Sunset Strip. Saturday night. Whisky A Go-Go. It’s a place where many of the greatest rock bands in the history of music started out; Motley Crue, Guns N’ Roses, The Doors and countless others. On the evening of September 13, 2014, 9Electric and Otherwise came out to a faithful, dedicated crowd to show them how great talent starts out.
Los Angeles locals 9Electric brought their strobe lights, energy, and loyal fans as they came on stage past 10:30pm for the final leg of the tour. This electronic hard rock quartet has only been around for 3 years but as seen from their diverse crowd, shouting the lyrics with singer Thunderwood, we know this band’s following grows with every show they perform. Their set began with Under Attack and continued with Time Bomb and Damaged Ones. As each song was performed, the intensity and energy in the room increased. Thunderwood was constantly reaching out and fist-bumping the loyal fans (and the new fans) while guitarist Mikey Lopez cooled down the crowd not only with his captivating riffs, but with water that he spit out into the crowd, like a true rockstar. 9Electric weren’t just celebrating for the end of the tour show but also the release of their newest EP, Control which was released on September 2, 2014. Out of the 6 songs on the EP, the band performed 5, omitting Control. It was great to see that just a little over a week, fans were already singing the lyrics verbatim to the new songs. The band also performed a few favorites including Feel This and their version of AC/DC’s Dirty Deeds which closed out their set. This band was one of the most diverse of the night, mixing together hard rock with electronic tunes and strobe lights. 9Electric is a mix of The Prodigy in terms of instruments and lighting and Rob Zombie when referring to Thunderwood’s grunge like vocals. If you’re looking to catch some local Los Angeles talent, be sure to check these guys out. There is something in them that everyone can enjoy, their stage presences or catchy songs, you are sure to like something.
Headlining the famous Whisky A Go Go were Otherwise from Las Vegas, Nevada. When you see a band like Otherwise performing at such a small (but historic) venue, you wonder to yourself, “Why aren’t these guys playing in arenas!?” Their stage personas, lyrics and musicianship is something that should be admired more than it is and these guys definitely deserve a bigger following. That being said, brother, Adrian Patrick on lead vocals and Ryan Patrick on guitar were humbled to be playing at the Whisky and give the fans an intimate performance. The members were constantly head-banging and coming up to the fans, holding onto them and high-fiving them. They performed many fan favorites including I Don’t Apologize (1000 Pictures), Die For You, Darker Side of the Moon and ended their set with their most popular song, Soldiers. In between the time they came on stage, to the time they exited the stage, they not only interacted with the crowd, one situation being Adrian Patrick bringing a little girl on stage; but they showed great skill with their instruments. Drummer Corky Gainsford was constantly entertaining the crowd with his stick flips and twirling as bassist Vassilios Metropoulos used the bass drum as his foot rest as he played his grooves. guitarists Andrew Pugh and Ryan Patrick were always head-banging and coming to the edge of the stage, showing the fans the complexity in their guitar playing.
Los Angeles is home to amazing talent and everyday there are multiple concerts going on that it’s hard to decide who to see. Every now and then, take a moment and check out the local venues that have lesser known bands because those are the band’s that always perform like it’s their last performance and will always give you something to remember.
